Feline evidence deserves its own reading frame. A finding in dogs, rodents, or people can justify a feline research question; it does not become a result in cats by analogy.
This explainer does not recommend a treatment, product, dose, supplement, or care plan. An individual cat’s care belongs with a veterinarian who can assess the full context.
01 · Species before mechanism
Feline plausibility is not a feline outcome.
A pathway observed in another species can be biologically interesting and still leave the feline question unanswered. First ask whether cats were studied. Then ask whether those cats resembled the population named in the claim and whether the study measured the claimed outcome.
“Relevant to cats” and “shown in cats” are different evidence states.
02 · Sample and setting
Write the feline population as a full sentence.
Record age, sex, neuter status when relevant, breed or crossbreed status, health criteria, living environment, geography, recruitment source, enrolled count, analyzed count, and follow-up. A primary-care record study, a referral-clinic cohort, and a laboratory experiment can each be rigorous while describing different populations.
Which cats entered, which were excluded, and how were they recruited?
What ages were represented, and was ‘senior’ defined before analysis?
Companion homes, primary-care records, referral clinics, laboratory housing, or another context?
Survival, diagnosis, a marker, clinician assessment, caregiver report, or everyday function?
03 · Definitions
Do not let “older” replace an age definition.
The 2021 AAHA/AAFP framework places cats older than 10 in the senior life stage. A study may use a different threshold for a defensible reason. Record the study’s definition rather than silently applying the guideline’s category. [1]
Age categories organize analysis. They do not prove that a birthday caused a functional change, and they do not make every senior cat clinically alike.
04 · Measurement
Name the endpoint more narrowly than the headline.
“Longevity” may refer to age at death, median survival, a life-table estimate, disease-free time, or another endpoint. “Healthspan” may be a defined composite or an undefined label. Record the exact outcome, how it was measured, when it was measured, and whether it was chosen before the analysis.
05 · Caregiver observations
A structured report is not the same as an improvised score.
Caregivers can observe chosen jumps, grooming, toileting, social routines, and movement that may not occur during a clinic visit. A validated instrument such as the Feline Musculoskeletal Pain Index asks bounded, repeatable questions in a defined context. A home-made “cat age score” does not inherit that validation.[4]
06 · Denominator
Ask which cats disappeared from the result.
Loss to follow-up, incomplete records, missing cause-of-death data, referral patterns, and caregiver decisions can change the group that remains visible. In electronic health-record studies, cats without recorded care are absent by design. The denominator is part of the conclusion.
07 · Constraint
Population evidence does not predict one cat.
The English primary-care longevity study is a population record from a particular country, period, and care system. It can describe patterns in captured records. It cannot assign an expiry date to an individual cat or establish that an associated characteristic caused longer life.[3]
- Was the feline population defined before the result?
- Is the setting visible in the headline and interpretation?
- Are raw counts, uncertainty intervals, and missing data available?
- Does the conclusion stay with the outcome actually measured?
- Are funding and relevant conflicts stated?
